  • Died: Sep 21, 1861, Bath, Mason County, Illinois, at birth

History & Notes

There are three records for Clark W. Charles Chatfield:

  • Isaac lists him on his Civil War pension application as Clark Charles Chatfield (no initial W.)
  • Written burial record stating his birth/death date and parents’ names—listing him as C.W.C. Chatfield. It is unknown what the W. stood for (though probably Willard—his father’s middle name). Clark and Charles are the names of Isaac’s two brothers and Eliza also has a brother named Clark.
  • Headstone: a lamb is carved at the top, common for an infant who died.

Isaac’s mother, Lovina (Mastick) Chatfield (died Apr 1858) is also buried in Bath cemetery (and has a headstone), as may also be the 1st child of Clark Samuel Chatfield, Sr. & Louisa Tankersley, Elizabeth Chatfield (born and died Aug 1859).

Note from Carole Martin to Catherine Sevenau:
Catherine,Bath Cemetery is a good-sized cemetery for a small community. It is still active and for the most part, in good shape. Like most cemeteries, it has old stones that are broken or lying on the ground and in danger of being covered up and others that are already completely covered by time, dirt and grass. It is a neat old cemetery with many Civil War stones. Because of the Lincoln connection, Bath had a lot of young men ready to follow him in war.

I’ve enclosed the welcome sign at the edge of town and also the plaque commemorating Lincoln’s speech, “a house divided”.
