Additions or Corrections?

by Catherine Sevenau on January 27, 2011

We would greatly appreciate any corrections or additions. We would love to have stories, newspaper clippings and old letters. We would do cartwheels for pictures.

Please send Chatfield family information, clippings or photos to: Catherine Sevenau.

Cheryl (Chatfield) Thompson is the major compiler, editor  and GEDCOM contributor (along with my brother Gordon) of our Chatfield genealogy. Cheryl has files on nearly 130,000 names of our respective Chatfield lines, of which a portion (15,000 connected to my direct line) are included herein. Send GEDCOM corrections to her.

You can click either of our links above, or, leave us a public message by clicking the comment link below. There is no contact link for Gordon as he rarely checks his email.

Hey you two! This website is terrific! What fun, and what an accomplishment. Catherine, did you build the website? Wow. I’ve been looking around for the past half-hour or so, and am very pleased with what you have done. This is a marvelous contribution to the family, and a justfication of your important work. Best wishes from Peg and me. Your cousin (by marriage.)

Hi Terry & Peg, Thanks for the nice words. I have a publisher and designer (Simon & Kate Warwick-Smith). When I changed direction and decided to publish on-line they fortunately had the skill and expertise to print in the clouds rather than on the paper. It will save some trees and also allow me to have a living document where I can edit and/or add new information as it comes in. Kate is doing the design and set-up and has done a beautiful job. It will take some months to finish as I still have much to add and format, but the overall look is fairly complete. I like it too!

Sandi Chatfield March 5, 2012 at 11:37 am

Hello,
My name is Sandi Burgess Chatfield. My husband is Harvey Ferdinand Chatfield. Silas Chatfield 1785-1866 is his third great-grandfather. I have recently begun the amazing journey of genealogy.
I just bought the book, THE CHATFIELD STORY, for Harvey. And have only begun to read it. I am trying to get to the original letters, and other info. and cannot get infor. It may be something I am doing wrong. But could use some advice.
Also I will try and forward some pictures of our Chatfield’s to you.
What other books, etc., are available? There seems to be so much out there.
I would appreciate any help you might give me.
Sincerely,
Sandi Chatifled

In 1639, from North Mundham, Sussex Shire, England on the ship St. John

Correction

In 1639, from North Mundham, County of Sussex, England on the ship St. John

Some counties have the suffix ‘shire’ such as Hertfordshire, Gloucestershire and Hampshire. But Sussex, Kent, Essex, Cornwall, and some others don’t.
In fact we don’t even say County of Sussex but just Sussex.

George and his brothers were not Religion: Church of England. They were Puritans or Dissenters. The Catholic Church up to the Reformation in the 1500’s was the religion. But when the Church of England was brought in there were many who did not agree but did not want to be Catholics either. That is why the Meeting House in Ditchling was created. Also it is the reason why Francis, Thomas and George emigrated because they did not want to be members of the Church of England.

This is far from a criticism as I know you will understand but an Englishman trying to help.

I am enjoying looking at your web site. Thank you very much for creating it. I have one question: didn’t The Chatfield brothers come to America in 1639 with Rev. Whitfield, Thayer than 1629?

By the way, I am a descendent of George Chatfield.

Catherine Sevenau March 12, 2014 at 7:05 pm

Hi Barbara, they did come in 1639. That was a typo on my part and it is now corrected. Thank you.

Barbara, I just found your note about your connection to the Chatfields. I too am a descendant of George. My grandmother was a child of Hannah Ward and Nelson Chatfield. I found a lot of info in the book Silas and Rachel Chatfield which was very interesting. A lot of history which brought it here to Fleming NY near where we had lived for 45 years and never connected it. I have pictures of Hannah but none before that except in the book. I am enjoying reading all the info online.

Hello, I’ve found my way to your site on my search for the origins of a headstone I came across recently by the name of Joseph Mastick. He passed in 1787 and according to your site was buried in Vermont. Can you provide the name of the town he was buried in? Was it possibly Grafton? Is there anything you can tell me about him?
Thanks!

My grandmother and Grandfather Emma and Earl Walston lived in the little house on Hornet Creek…..down a dirt road that’s off the Hornet Creek Rd near where Ridge Rd meets Hornet Ck road. I think it was the house that Mildred and Kenny Harrington lived…but not certain.

Do you have any info, or Hornet Creek stories, I could share mine. Joan Lyon

Good morning! It was interesting to find this! I am ASSUMING you come from the linage of George as I haven’t heard any of these names in my family genealogy. I come from the linage of Thomas Chatfield.

My cousin Marilyn Chatifeld Slater is taking on the continuing work of her and my father’s research in our genealogy. Our dad’s, of course, had the same info as you on where the Chatfield name originated. However, she said that she had found out that information was incorrect.

Do you know of Harry or Kermit Chatfield?

I am Harry’s youngest, Dawn. 🙂

Hi Dawn, I just saw this note! I’ll respond to you by email. Catherine
