Jul 22, 1835: Marriage of Levi Tomlinson Chatfield and Lovina Mastick, in Chardon, Geauga County, Ohio. Levi is age 34 years of age and Lovina is about 25 at the time of their marriage. Chardon is the county seat near their home of Bath.

Chardon, Geauga County, Ohio
Chardon in 1846 – Chardon is the county-seat, 170 miles northeast of Columbus, and twenty-eight miles from Cleveland. It was laid out about the year 1808, for the county-seat, and named for Peter Chardon Brookes, of Boston, then proprietor of the soil. There are but few villages in Ohio that stand upon such an elevated, commanding ridge as this, and it can be seen in some directions for several miles; although but fourteen miles from Lake Erie, it is computed to be 600 feet above it. The village is scattered and small. In the centre is a handsome green of about eleven acres, on which stands the public buildings, two of which, the court-house and Methodist church, are shown in the engraving. Chardon has six stores, a newspaper printing office, and in 1840 had 466 inhabitants–Old Edition.

Prior to having a building the children assembled in one of the homes, a church or vacant building, and were taught by a raveling teacher, who boarded with the different parents. Before the hamlet of Peterville was laid out in 1868, the school was known as the “Leaf School.” Old records show that N. Leaf owned the land on Porterville corner, and the Leaf family were instrumental in building the original schoolhouse. Mrs. Levina Chatfield was the first teacher, and she was paid $20.70 per month on October 5, 1850. The salary was paid according to the number of pupils in attendance. In the year of 1856-1857, taxes were levied in the amount of $106.18 to build a school. District 4 and later changed to District 59. The school was a small frame structure located on the east side of the old Springfield Road, laid out by Abraham Lincoln. In 1874 the school was sold to James Waterworth for $29.00, and a larger building was erected north of the old site.

Bath, Mason County, Illinois
The town of Bath, Illinois was settled in 1828 by John Stewart and John Gillespie, soon to be followed by other Kentuckians. Abraham Lincoln surveyed the town in 1836. The second house and first mansion, a two-story red brick Italianate four-square, was built by Major Benjamin H. Gatton in the 1840s. The town name is said to have originated with some English settlers, who thought the area looked like the land around Bath, England. Bath was the Mason County seat from 1843 to 1851. The town was the site of one of Abraham Lincoln’s “a house divided…cannot stand” speeches in 1858.
The first businesses in Bath included several blacksmiths: Guy Spencer, John Hortsman, and George Steigleder. Other establishments were Gatton and Ruggles flourmill, Cragg’s sawmill, replaced in 1975 by Bath Mill, manufacturer of “Queen of Mason” flour, and a newspaper, the Bath Journal, W.W. Stout, publisher, founded in 1860.
